๐Ÿ”Ž Universal Word Finder

Find words by length, known letters, must-contain and excluded letters, prefix, suffix, repeated letters and wildcards, all in one search.

One search for every kind of word puzzle

The Universal Word Finder combines all the clues you have into a single search. Set the word length, type the letters you already know with an underscore for each gap, list letters the word must contain, and list letters it cannot contain. Every filter works together, so each clue you add shortens the list.

Use it for Wordle-style puzzles, crosswords, Scrabble racks, word searches and any game where you know part of the answer. Words are listed with the most common ones first, and you can tap any word to see its meaning.

What each filter does

Your search is saved in the page address, so you can bookmark or share it.

How to use the universal word finder

  1. Enter the word length if you know it.
  2. Type the letters you know in the pattern box, using _ for each unknown letter.
  3. Add letters the word must contain and letters to exclude.
  4. Optionally add a start, ending, sequence or length range, then tap a word to see its meaning.

Example: Length 5, pattern _ a _ _ e, must contain R and exclude S, T and O gives words such as carve, barge and farce. Add a start of ca to narrow it further.

Frequently asked questions

How do I search with some letters known?

Type the word length and enter the letters you know in the pattern box, using an underscore for each unknown letter. For example _ a _ _ e finds five-letter words with A second and E last.

What is the difference between known letters and must contain?

Known letters fix a letter in an exact position. Must contain only requires the letter to appear somewhere in the word.

Can I search without knowing the length?

Yes. Leave the length empty and use a minimum and maximum, or use * in the pattern for any run of letters.

Why do I get a message instead of results?

Some filters can contradict each other, for example excluding a letter you also require, or a pattern length that does not match the word length. The message says which filters to fix.
